Outdoor Education Center
Results from the 2000 Census suggest that by the year 2050, ethnic
minorities and multi-racial groups will comprise 47% of the United
States population. This serves to remind us of how urgent it is
to advance the principles of preservation, protection, enhancement,
and sustainability of America’s open spaces to all people.
Beckwourth’s Outdoor Education Center (OEC) was founded in
1998 and has benefited over 1000 Metro Denver urban youth. Eighty-nine
percent of OEC youth reside in single-parent households. This FREE
program offers year-round trips to national parks, state parks,
wilderness areas, and cultural/scientific institutions. All food,
transportation and outdoor equipment are provided. Not a camp, the
OEC is a nationally recognized life-changing mentoring and leadership
development program for youth ages 8-18.
OEC program goals include:
- leadership development of urban youth through long-term mentoring
by positive adult and peer role models
- empowering urban youth to become productive members of society
- empowering urban youth to give back to their communities
- expanding educational opportunities to urban youth
- encouraging the pursuit of academic achievement
- increasing the number of urban youth who choose careers in
the science and natural resource fields
- social and character development
