Beckwourth's Legacy
James P. Beckwourth: Our Namesake
James (Jim) Pierson Beckwourth, born in 1798, was a bi-racial African
American Legend of the West. He was a mountain man, fur trapper,
explorer, frontiersman, army scout, War Chief of the Crow Indians,
trading post owner and manager, co-founder of the city of Pueblo,
Colorado, and discoverer of the Beckwourth Pass in California’s
Sierra Nevada Range. Beckwourth was literate, wrote an autobiography
with Thomas Daniel Bonner, The Life and Adventures of James P. Beckwourth,
published in 1858, and was fluent in English, Spanish, French and
a multitude of Native American languages.
Beckwourth Outdoors strives to preserve Jim Beckwourth’s
legacy by providing outdoor programs to diverse youth and families
and educating the public about people-of-color in the West.
