What is a Photofacial?

At your local laser spa, you may be surprised to find that there are numerous options available to you, which are all meant to enhance your outward appearance and self-confidence. Included on the long list of products and procedures are often the hCG diet, filler injections, eyelash enhancement, and, something called a laser facial.

For those who are not familiar with the latter, a laser facial can be a very highly desired procedure for those who suffer from acne, acne scaring, rosacea, as well as other skin blemishes and discolorations. Performed by a dermatologist, hCG doctor Austin, or cosmetic surgeon, a specialized laser is put to work to smooth, clean, and resurface the skin. This process can be used to treat specific, problem areas on the face or it can tackle the whole surface. There are a couple of different methods of laser facial that can be performed depending on the needs of the individual.

Ablative Laser Facial

This first method involves a laser that works much like a sandblaster would. It aims to remove outer layers of the skin, thereby reducing wrinkling, scaring, and other issues, to reveal a new, smoother, healthier layer of skin beneath. The heat of the laser also stimulates collagen growth. Collagen is a naturally occurring protein, which is found in flesh and connective tissue. It provides skin with the natural elasticity. Unfortunately, as we age, the amount of collagen produced within the body is depleted, which is much of the reason for sagging and wrinkling. When the laser’s heat stimulates new collagen development, the skin becomes more taught, thereby minimizing the unsightly signs of aging.

Non-Ablative Laser Facial

The second option relies on the heat to do what was mentioned above. When the goal is not so much about reducing scarring or other marks on the face, but instead about providing a more youthful appearance, this is often the chosen method, because collagen is the main goal of non-ablative laser facials. The outer layer of the skin is not removed, so the healing time is less extensive, but collagen growth is still stimulated, so wrinkling and sagging it less noted.

It is important to understand that laser facials are medical procedures performed by trained physicians. The process is not to be taken lightly and patients should follow the aftercare instructions of the doctor. Though the process can take as little as a few minutes (or more than an hour, depending on the area being treated), redness, swelling, and scabbing are common. Depending on the type of laser facial provided, the pink skin color can last for several weeks and it will be important to keep the skin well hydrated and protected from the sun. The good news, however, is that the final results will be noted shortly thereafter and can last for a very long time, as long as the skin is properly cared for. This is considered a very safe and effective procedure for most individuals. Speak to a professional near you if you would like to enjoy the benefits of photofacial Austin.
